Hidden Characters for Business Use

Hidden Characters

Standard keyboards display about 105 characters, numbers, and symbols but some characters are hidden inside.

They’re called ASCII characters and can be inserted into most applications!

Office Users

Office users can access symbols from the “Insert” toolbar. The “Symbol” menu is usually on the far right of the menu bar.

A dialog box pops up allowing users to navigate the many available symbols associated with different fonts. Wingding fonts provide an entire range of icons that can be inserted into Office apps.
Direct Entry

Using the Number Pad and ALT key provides hot-key access to hidden keyboard characters.

Simply press & hold the ALT key, enter the number on the keypad & release the alt key.

ASCII characters print in most applications.

However, the results may vary with different apps and fonts.

For example, the hotkey combination of ALT+8453 produces the Care-Of character in Office but prints the Club character in Notepad and Quickbooks. Notably the ℅ character can be pasted into both applications.

♣ ℅

ASCII characters are embedded in the keyboard and print in almost anything. Where application support fails, these characters can be copied from an Office app and pasted into other applications.
